Dark Spot: The DIY Remedy

Dark Spot: The DIY Remedy

Dark Spot – Treatment with Essential oils: Main focus on Tea tree oil, Rose Water, DIY remedies and solution.

This article stemmed up from a purging situation my skin faced when I tried out a new product: the Alpha H Liquid Gold Glycolic Acid

I had read a lot of reviews on it on how it was absolute gold in skincare and immediately, could not stop myself from purchasing one. Even still, I could not wait to use it.

This is a liquid serum with 5% Glycolic Acid. Glycolic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid.  Glycolic Acid is obtained from Sugar cane (just so you know it is natural)y and this bottle promised to harness the powerful exfoliating, cell- stimulating properties of an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, which basically helps melt the glue that binds dead cells to the skin surface, and then a fresh new skin resurfaces beneath.

Dark spot

As with the exfoliating properties of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), it penetrates deep within pores to banish spot-causing bacteria and diminishes the signs and marks of acne scars so your complexion would be more luminous and you’d have an even skin tone.

All instructions were adhered to. It says to apply with a dampened cotton pad, once, every alternate night and for best results, do not follow with a moisturiser or serum (for maximum anti- aging and skin brightening benefits).

After first use, yes, I woke up to a very bright and glowing skin without any thing else, as in, that was how I woke up and yes, I had the most horrid, terrifying breakout, ever!!!!! My forehead, my cheeks. Gosh, I felt hurt. Everyone asked if I had a boil, rash, acne and pimples at the same time… It was embarrassing.

Inspite of this, I continued. I liked the idea of Glycolic acid and a natural active brightening ingredients-Licorice. I was enjoying the benefits but I did not like the breakouts and my concern was the spots, waiting to leave it’s mark!!

Dark spot

For successful treatment of acne marks and scars, we must distinguish between the two. “Patients often mistake dark spots for acne scars but they’re actually very different,” says New York-based dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D.

The usual red, purple, or brown marks that linger after a pimple or blemishes have been gone, is classified by dermatologist, as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Dark spot like dotted lines might be observed too

These marks can take between 3-6 months to fade away on its own but you can accelerate that, with diligent and careful application of Vitamin C Serums, topical retinoids and natural brightening lotion. I used all 3 and Glycolic acid. I kept using it still.

Real acne scars are permanent from collagen damage and  laser treatments and temporary dermal fillers are the only ways to treat this.

What causes acne scars and dark marks or Dark spot?

Dark spot that lingers after a pimple has faded are as a result of inflammation that disrupted the skin’s natural healing process.

“When your skin is opened up, like when you pop a pimple, and then closes back together, you can get abnormal pigmentation, texture, and tone that looks different from the rest of your skin. Sometimes the broken blood vessels that remain after an acne lesion fades can result in a mark,” says Dr. Bowe.

Luckily, there are a number of people that do not pick their faces when they have acne and spots. This helps the spot face gradually over time.

Skin tones play a big role. Red or purple marks in lighter skin tone fades within weeks. In darker skin tones, the brown spot takes about four months.

How do I tackle these blemishes and breakout turned Dark spot?

This can be the crux of this article. Dark spot treatment and after such a long epistle, the remedies are pretty simple. At least, if you follow through.

Regarding the spots I was left with on my cheeks, I trust it would fade within a few weeks.

During the breakout process, I helped accelerate its healing by keeping it moisturised and protected. I always made sure I tried to dry out the acne/ pimples/ cysts/ breakouts by using Sandalwood and Rose water (I make this into a runny paste, I use this on my face until the paste dries out, then I follow through with steps 1-4 of my skincare regimen) every morning. It helped control the blemishes and swellings too. At night time, I followed through with my normal skincare routine, including the Glycolic acid Alpha H Liquid Gold.

On alternate nights, when I’m not using the Glycolic Acid, I use the Acne Spot treatment and I dab Tea Tree and Rose Mary esssential oils on the exact spot. Dabbing, not rubbing. After this, I follow through my skincare regimen.

As stated earlier, I followed through the normal skincare regimen, which means heavy use of sunscreen, Vitamin C Serums, Retinols and Niacinamide.

Here’s why:

Retinols: It helps to speed up the rate of cell turnover and gently exfoliates the skin. I use Retin A. This super star product helps push colour pigments to be shed off with other dead cells, while revealing a healthy skin underneath.

Sunscreen: Sun exposure makes acne marks, scars and blemishes more prominent. It also darkens the marks further more when exposed and actual sunlight can penetrate your clothes so be careful and diligent enough to wear sunscreen everyday.

Vitamin C serum: Topical application of the C helps brighten the skin, accelerate healing and promotes collagen production. I use one with Ferulic Acid, it helps the L-Ascorbic acid get into the skin so it’s still effective after it dries up

Skin brightener: I have made an emulsion of sweet Almond oil, Lemon butter and Licorice extract to brighten my skin and it’s appearances.

Chemical Peels: Well, since I’m kind enough not to use them on my face yet, I will be using exfoliants to get rid of the dead cells.

I am already seeing a difference and I am patient enough to wait the healing process out.

A great skincare regimen makes all the difference and you must also know, I am definitely not picking my face, popping the breakouts or forever touching it.
