Moisturiser– The often overlooked skincare product after a Sunscreen.
Moisturisers are designed to keep your skin happy. A simple Moisturiser is sufficient to add a line of defence to the skin, prevent environmental damages, maintain and bolster the complexion of the skin and helps lock in moisture.
It helps relieve and soothe dry or itchy skin.
I had written in a post about how I hated Moisturisers. I remembered avoiding it like a plague because it made my skin sticky and oily. It was so uncomfortable to use and I thought it made me sweat.
This turned my skin into a walking dry bunch. I developed scars, spots, stretch marks and my skin lost its elasticity, suppleness and bounce. I researched deeply on how to get rid of dry, dehydrated skin and this made me discover a library of things to share however, I’ll keep it strictly to the subject. Ok?
Now, my skin is a LOT better than before. This is because I found the right moisturiser for my skin and all the essential ingredients required to get the skin to the desired texture, complexion and elasticity. It’s amazing how my skin transformed.
The four essential ingredients a good Moisturiser should have to are:
Humectants: Hydrates – These are moisture absorbers that draw water from the air and keep it in the Skin when applied. They keep the skin hydrated. Common humectants are Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid. There are actually a laundry list. They are ideal for all skin type.
Emollients: Softens- Emollients are space fillers that help fill the gaps between the skin and lipids (that are not adequately moisturised). They help the skin to be smoother and hydrated by sealing water onto the skin. Common ingredients are Lanolin, Squalane, Oils, Butters & Beeswax. They are used for dry, extremely dry and dehydrated skin.
Ceramides: Glues- These are found in the skin and play a vital role as they make up over 50% of the skin’s composition. Think of it as a glue or cement that holds the skin together (like a mortar between two bricks), by protecting the skin from environmental damages, visible damages and age. They are an anti aging powerhouse, better than Retinol, Peptides and Niacinamide. Cool? An uncommon ingredient is the actual Ceramides and it is suitable for Dry skin, those with Eczema, Normal and combination skin types.
Occlusives: Seals- They help seal the moisture on the skin. They are thicker and they help prevent loss of moisture from the skin by sealing it in and acts as a barrier on the skin (Stratum Corneum). Common ingredients are oils, emulsions, Beeswax, dimethicone and Lanolin. They are ideal for Dry, Extremely dry, mature & dehydrated skin types. Avoid if skin is oily or acne prone.
Choosing the right Moisturiser
When it comes to choosing the right Moisturiser, you must pay attention to your skin type and skin concern (skin problems)
