Dark Spots: The Ordinary Brand Review

Dark Spots: The Ordinary Brand Review

On dark spots. You guys, I had written this on my IG Page. I never knew I’d say this but I just have to be honest. The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin + HA helped in making the dark spots go away.

The Ordinary Brand has managed to sell their products as cheap as chips and it’s great to have good skincare brands making their products relatively affordable and accessible however, if all these mean nothing to you but the actual efficacy of the product (aka does it work?), then I have some news.

I have used some products by The Ordinary and while I appreciate it being affordable, it hasn’t worked for my skin the way it should, at least 95% of the ones I have used.

The newest was the Advanced Retinol 2% and I used up all products. No difference!!! I was so gutted.

If you remembered the Alpha H Review I made (with Glycolic acid and Licorice), you’ll know how hard that product almost destroyed my skin until it healed my skin (the irony but you’ll read it here).

The specifics of this AA + HA Serum

After being left with the dark spots almost non existent but definitely visible, I thought to get a skincare product that was affordable and had a strength so impressive. I settled for the Alpha Arbutin + HA from The Ordinary.

This came in a gel form and a frosted bottle with a topper. It’s a serum (the bottle says).

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin Serum with 2% HA

Description on the brand’s website:

Alpha Arbutin reduces the looks of spots and hyper-pigmentation. It’s used at a high 2% concentration versus a standard concentration of 1% and supported with a next-generation form of Hyaluronic Acid for enhanced delivery. Alpha Arbutin is much stronger in effect than Arbutin or Beta Arbutuin.

Note: Alpha Arbutin is extremely sensitive to degradation in the presence of water if the pH of the formulation is not ideal. The pH of this formula is approximately 4.9 which is shown to be the most suitable pH to minimize degradation of Alpha Arbutin.

Direction (to use)
Apply a few drops to face in the AM and PM as part of your skincare regimen. Use sun protection in the AM

Ingredients
Aqua (Water), Alpha-Arbutin, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Propanediol, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Lactic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin

After using a few products and promising myself that I will not purchase from this brand, the list of ingredients for this product was simple and exactly what I liked. I noticed it had Water, AA, emulsifiers and co-emulsifiers, Hydrating ingredients, stabilisers and an exfoliant (all the way down, though). I purchased.

I used this product well over 4 weeks, every day. I’d cleanse with a normal cleanser and tried to  keep my routine as minimal.

Cleanser– Acure facial Scrub or Dove /Ambi

Tone – Paula’s Choice 2% BHA

Treatment – Alpha Arbutin + HA (this product)

Moisturise– Alpha Skincare with 12% Glycolic Acid

Layered with Black spot corrector and Sweet Almond Oil.

Sunscreen– Obagi broad spectrum SPF 50

Four weeks in, the difference was amazing. A few doubts, a few thoughts.. but the product was inexpensive (at about 5,000 Naira) so I would have only wasted my time.

I honestly didn’t expect much from this product. I got it, used it continuously without checking if it was making any difference. I only wanted to get done with the bottle so I could move on to other things. One day, I opened up the Blinds to examine my face and the pleasant surprise inspired this post.

It was well worth it.

P.S – Skin type is so different so people react to products differently.

One product that worked for me might not work for you.
